Will we really be dancing all night?
We alternate between movement waves and periods of rest. The waves differ from most dance parties: they begin slowly, with an emphasis on awareness of and through the body, and build through various tempos and textures for about an hour each. Rest periods between waves last 20–30 minutes. Lie down on a provided tri-fold mattress in the temple, or spend time outside under the night sky.
Do I need to know how to dance?
No. The dance here is free-form and instinctual: you move your body however you want. In that sense, you already know how. There's no particular form (like salsa, bachata or ballet), so the emphasis is on self-inquiry and expression, not performance.
I've never danced all night before. Should I still come?
Yes. Many people who join us haven't danced all night like this before. If you like to move your body in community, you'll be well supported. The night moves in waves with rest between them, and you're always free to slow down, rest or step outside.
Will it be a New Year's party?
If your ideal party has intentional movement as the conversation, communal meals as the nourishment and dance as the mind-altering practice, then yes! There's no alcohol or recreational drugs, and once the movement ceremony begins there's no talking in the temple, so it's different from the New Year's parties many people are used to. We'll ring in the new year with a non-alcoholic toast.
I have physical limitations or injuries. Can I still come?
Yes. You're free to move in whatever way feels right for your body. Handicapped parking is available. Please reach out if your physical limitations require crutches or a wheelchair.
Will we be dancing with partners?
Generally, no. At times the facilitators may guide you to turn your attention toward each other to build connection, but it isn't partner dancing. We have a group agreement of consent for physical touch, so if you come with a partner or friend, or establish consent with someone, you're welcome to bring physical contact into your dance.
Can I come for part of the event?
No. We've created the experience as a ceremony where we begin and end together. That creates a sense of trust and togetherness that wouldn't be possible with people coming and going.
What should I bring?
Not much. Bring clothing layers and bedding to be comfortable through the night. Space in the temple is very limited, so there'll be an area on the deck outside the temple for your bag with clothing and toiletries.
What about the bathroom situation?
There are indoor toilets and an outdoor shower. Bring a towel if you plan to shower.
Is there cell service or wi-fi?
There's cell service at the venue. We ask that participants stay off their devices during the movement ceremony (about 9pm–6am). If you need to check in with partners, kids, pet-sitters or others, plan to do it before the ceremony begins.
How do I apply for a reduced-tuition work-study spot?
We have a couple of spots at 50% tuition for participants who help with set-up and take-down. Work-study participants meet us in Ojai at 11am on Dec 31 and wrap up around 2pm on Jan 1. If you're energized by helping set a beautiful container and being part of a crew, email us directly to apply.
